School Pantry Closets
What Is a School Pantry Closet?
At Kinds Against Hunger United, we saw a need to help struggling students. We are working to create an accessible supply of shelf-stable food and various hygiene products. These are school-based micro-pantries that students in need can access while at school. The first school pantry closet was recently created by Luke Walters, as part of his Eagle Scout Project.
Kids Against Hunger United provides the starting stock/inventory, and they are restocked by the school with donor and sponsor support. The non-refrigerated foods and sundries and hygiene items are replenished through generous contributions and support from donors.
Besides supplying the initial inventory/stock, KAH United provides marketing materials and support for sustaining the program through the donations and sponsors. They also provide cost information for the schools and donor/sponsors, as well as sponsor “shout-out” acknowledgements and “text-to-give” mechanisms and school fundraising guides/models.
There is a 60-day onboarding process. KAH United currently has a wait list as they partner with schools together to make sure they are sustainable programs. Here is a link to sign up to either establish a school pantry, or donate to sponsor or support one.
